About this area:
 Located in the far northeast corner of California, Modoc County is bordered by the states of Oregon to the north and Nevada to the east. Surrounding counties include Siskiyou to the west, and Lassen and Shasta counties to the south. Modoc’s extensive transportation system includes highways, railroads, and airports. The principle route through the county is U.S. Highway 395, which passes through Alturas, the county seat, and crosses the eastern part of the county from north to south. State Highway 139 traverses northwest to Tule Lake, a wildlife refuge near Lava Beds National Monument. Railroads serve Modoc’s principal communities, in addition to airports located in Alturas, Cedarville, and Fort Bidwell.
