Nonprofit refers to organizations that are neither for-profit businesses nor government agencies. Nonprofits are a subset of private industry. Nonprofits include, but are not limited to, hospitals, churches, educational institutions, social welfare organizations, and charitable organizations such as disaster relief, civil rights, community development, environmental advocacy, and the arts. Charitable organizations also include hospitals and private schools.

Research data on employment and wages for the nonprofit sector are available by industry sector, county, nonprofit type, and size. These data provide insight into this important segment of the State and U.S. economy.

  • There are 31,662 nonprofit firms in California
  • Nonprofit Firms employ 1.7 million employees
  • Total California nonprofit wages (subject to unemployment insurance) are $29.9 billion
  • Nonprofits employ 9% of the California workforce
  • 57 nonprofit firms each employ over 3,000 employees
  • The largest type of nonprofit entity are 501(c)(3) organizations which employ 1.38 million employees
  • The top three counties that employ the largest number of nonprofit employees are Los Angeles (411,687), Santa Barbara (302,114), and Santa Clara (163,444).
